Hotel hospitality combines with art and creates the most original hotel of Italy. It happens in Pesaro, in the Marche Region, with the Alexander Museum Palace Hotel. The hotel is a complex work of art, the fruit of four years’ work involving famous and emerging contemporary artists.
Artists such as Arnaldo Pomodoro, Enzo Cucchi, and Mimmo Paladino, to name just a few, have made their contribution to create this “permanent performance”, as the owner, Count Alexander-Ferruccio Marcucci Pinoli di Valfesina – Nani to his friends – calls it. The Count is a very unusual and eclectic personality – a writer, poet, sculptor and leading figure in the cultural life of Pesaro.
All the rooms and reception areas, every single detail, is the work of a different artist, from the 15-metre-high landmark stone at the entrance, to the doors of the guest rooms, each one a work of art in itself and different from all the others. Nine floors of dynamic contemporary art, that make the Alexander an experimental workshop for new forms of expression in painting, sculpture, video art and all the other creative acts that human ingenuity can conceive of. |
A hotbed of activity
With architects, engineers and one hundred artists Count Nani di Valfesina has created a “living” work, a great sculpture nine floors high on the Pesaro sea front, and at the same time a complex “installation” with many protagonists, able to give a “performance” 365 days of the year, 24 hours a day. The Alexander Museum Palace Hotel will become a hive of activity, with a constant flow of debates, conferences and seminars, on art and for art.
This is the perfect project for its creator, Nani di Valfesina, described by his friends as “courteous, receptive, original….. someone whose existence is founded on paradox”. Lawyer, consul and ambassador, Nani “has always been a man involved in public and private enterprises and initiatives, but with a definite preference for those with a cultural bias”.

A unique work of art
The hotel, which is completely white, will be introduced by its 15-metre-high landmark stone, created by Arnaldo Pomodoro. It has 63 rooms created by 75 artists. Every detail, from the entrance to the interior furnishings, is the result of the creative force of the designer, whose name it bears.
In every room, the artist has used a different material and technique, from iron to Plexiglas to resin. And the techniques range from dripping to pencil drawing to decoupage. And of course the other areas – the corridors, the reception rooms, the pool – are the work of a further 25 artists. The swimming pool is an “infinity pool” of blue mosaics, located in front of the hotel between the beach and the hotel building.
On the ground floor there is the first of the hotel’s three restaurants, decorated with works by Primo Formenti, Gino Marotta, Mimmo Paladino, Enzo Cucchi, and others. Of the other two restaurants, one is on the roof, where flute and harp concerts will be held, and one is in the basement. The latter is to be called “Taverne dell’Arte” and it will have a “marine garden” with sand and a mirror-ceiling. In all three restaurants it will be possible to sample the Marche cuisine. The outdoor project has been directed by architect Marco Tamino, who participated in the restyling work on Rome’s Termini station. |
Guests as protagonists of the artistic event
The Alexander is an open area: there will always be exhibitions, debates, conferences, auctions and trading of works of art, as well as courses in watercolour painting, ceramics, metalwork and portrait painting. Count Nani di Valfesina’s intention is that the “workshop”, as it is conceived, will not be the exclusive prerogative of the “experts”. In fact, he hopes that the guests who decided to stay at the Alexander Museum Palace Hotel will also be involved as protagonists in playing this artistic role, in which they will be able to enjoy the benefits of art-therapy or demonstrate their creative talents and become, in their turn, the authors of Art’s universal message. Finally, they will also be able to give their paintings in part payment for their holiday.
